The Banana Blossom Story Behind Fishoria’s Vegan Fish in Covent Garden

Friday evening fish and chip supper, it seems to me there could be nothing more British than this. We don’t think so. However, until recently, when you were a vegetarian, the extent of your chippy meal was a serving of chips and perhaps a serving of mushy peas.

We tried to change this at Fishoria. We feel that food is a bonding experience, and we all should not be left to sit on the periphery as our friends enjoy a feast. That’s why we set out on a mission to create the best vegan fish and chips London has to offer right here in the heart of Covent Garden.

We did not want to simply go with a processed vegetable patty and consider our work done. We desired the experience, the flake, the crunch and the flavour. Bring on our hidden arm, the banana blossom.

What Banana Blossom Is and Why It Works as a Fish Alternative?

Unless you have heard about it yet, you are not the only one! Yet it is rapidly turning into the star in the vegetarian universe.

This is why we were in love with it to add it to our menu:

  • The Texture: It is the mushy, purple-coloured flower which sprouts on the tip of a bunch of banana fruits. Contrary to tofu or jackfruit, its natural texture is chunky and fibrous and breaks apart just as cod or haddock would.
  • The Flavour Profile: It is slightly nutty and neutral. This is ideal as it is able to absorb all our marinades, as well as that traditional batter taste.
  • The Presentation: When fried and battered, it looks exactly like the real one.

How Fishoria Developed the Recipe?

Creating London vegan fish and chips that stand up to our traditional menu took some time in the kitchen. We consider ourselves to be craftsmen, not fast-food servers, and thus we tried until it was ideal.

We handle the banana blossom as well as we handle our fresh fish. In the preparation of our authentic tastes, we add seaweed to add a faint salty ocean flavour. It is rolled in rice paper to replicate the skin of hard fish, lightly battered and then fried until golden.

Wonder what we have besides to eat with it? You may refer to the entire aroma of sides and sauces in our full menu here.

Texture, Flavour, and Experience for Vegan Diners

The most frequent question that we receive is, My partner eats fish, but I am a vegan, can we both eat well here?

The answer is a massive yes. We are aware of the fact that going out to eat in London is associated with compromise. Typically, the vegan diner must haul his friends to a vegetarian-only establishment, or the seafood fan hauls the vegan to a venue with one measly vegan salad. You can see for yourself in our full menu here.

We fill the gap; at Fishoria, we fill it:

  • No Compromise: Vegans receive a carefully designed, quality, and veg-friendly alternative to meat-eaters.
  • Shared Experiences: You both are able to savour the ritual of squeezing lemon, dipping chips and savouring the crunch.
  • Inclusivity: We fry our vegan fish and chips separately to ensure peace of mind.

Forward-Thinking, Traditionally Rooted

We are proud to be a Covent Garden vegan destination, but we haven’t lost our identity. We remain that welcoming, busy place where you can take food before going to the theatre, or you can sit outside in the sun close to Oxford Street. We’ve just evolved. The banana blossom innovation will serve to maintain the memory of the British fish and chip shop, but will ensure that it is prepared to withstand the future of food.

You can either be a long-time vegan or a food adventure,r and we would love to prepare your food.
